Release The Kraken!

An old school friend and I were recently talking, and the idea of collaborating on a painting together came up. I haven’t painted in an awfully long time due to my focus on graphics, so the prospect of getting messy with some paint was too tempting!

I’ve had a recent fascisnation with Octopuses, so I really liked the idea of a Kraken attacking a ship. This is common imagery for the Kraken as it is part of it’s myth. We completed it over two days, but counted it as about eight to nine hours.

It was really fun getting back into painting, and a new experience being able to share the process with someone, and relying on their opinion when in doubt! We’ve already talked about ideas for another painting!

Here are some photos of the painting in progress.

Graphic Design Research Journal

For my first Graphic Design assignment in first semester of year two, I had to research and test various different methods and replicate different types of design and present it in a professionally printed book.

I am currently in the process of creating another one, this time documenting the making of a promotional campaign for Waterstones, the book shop. The aim is to get more people to get reading and appreciate books again.

Here are a few images of my Research Journal. 20140112_114253 20140112_114628

Stencils

As part of development for my Graphic Design assignment, I had to create stencils and use them. It was quite a challenge as I am not used to using a scalpel and cutting paper. It was also quite difficult figuring out which parts were to be cut or kept.
The results came out better than I had anticipated, so I am really pleased. I also used the new Windsor and Newton inks I purchased on the weekend.

Ink

Yesterday I bought some Windsor & Newton inks for the first time. I’ve never used ink before, so it was quite exciting opening them up and dipping my brush into the cute glass pots for the first time.
I’ve only bought four to begin with (Violet, Apple Green, Blue and Scarlet), and I hope to add more colours.
Tomorrow, I’ll be using them on some stencils I’ve cut, so I hope they’ll be up for the job!
In the mean time, here is a page of doodling I’ve been doing for the past hour of this Sunday afternoon.
